John Marchington.1763.& Betty Potts

a.1.1.1.3.1.2.1. John Marchington.18 Oct 1763 - 1808. Born Goyts Moss, Ches. Married  Elizabeth (Betty) Potts on the 5th Oct 1800. PR. They obtained a marriage license on the 2nd Oct 1800 at Bakewell, for what reason is unknown as they are both stated as being over the age of 21 on it and Betty doesn't seem to have been pregnant but I guess Betty is a cousin of John as his mother was a Pott from Tideswell as well.  It could have been the fact that the two family's were already related.  Betty Potts was born in 1776.
Children:
Baptised
01 Nov 1801.   John Marchington. Mention in fathers Will
Baptised. 12 May 1805.   Joseph Marchington.  Mention in fathers Will
Baptised           c1803       Mary Marchington.  Mention in fathers Will

Elizabeth his wife mentioned in the will.

John took up the  lease on Halsteads farm that being his Grandfathers farm and the farm may have been on a 999year lease.  Halsteads may have been leased out by Joseph Marchington to Thomas Hallam  as the farm is in the possession of Thomas Hallam before 1800. Thomas Hallam would later have a child Hannah who would marry John & Betty's  son.

John Marchington died on the 4th of Feb 1808 age 44 at Halsteads, he died before his father Joseph. Who died in October 1809.
John Marchington Jnr when he reach the age of 21 had taken over the running of Halstead farm. His brother Joseph and their mother Elizabeth are stated in the 1841 census as living at Hall Hill farm in Bradshaw Edge. Joseph occupation being stated as a farmer, being the age of 30 years.

However after the death of John in 1808., who died due to an acute illness. Betty remarried.  Betty married her late husbands second cousin, also called John Marchington. The marriage took place at Chapel on the 28th December 1813. This John was also a widower who's deceased wife was also called Betty. John was born at  Sittinglow farm, the farm next door to Halstead farm. This John moved to Halsteads and probably took over the running of the farm and having further children to Betty. When Young John reach the age of 21 he acquired the estate as according to his late fathers Will. John & Betty would seem to have moved on.
This  John died on the 28th May 1828 age 59. This John left no will.

Its possible John 1763-1808 sold or agreed to lease some tenant land in Bowden Edge to the High Peak Canal Company in 1793 probably in the construction of the Tram way which abutted Halsteads farm. source W.Eyre.

a.1.1.1.3.1.2.1.1. John Marchington. Bpt 1st Nov 1801.  Son of John Marchington. PR. Halsted farm..  Occupation  Farmer. Halstead Farm Hallstead (Dove Holes). Wife Hannah Hallam.1801. Married on the 28 Feb 1826 at St John's Church, Byron St, Deansgate, Manchester.
The entry in the PR is given as: John Marchington of this parish & of this Town Manchester, Farmer. Hannah Hallam of this parish both spinsters, married by Rob Dallas, witnessed by William sllcaid (very unclear)& J Hallam, possible Hannah's brother John. No 451. Page 151 Film ref No: MFPR 1121 Marriages 1823-1918 Why they got married in Manchester is a mystery, maybe it was a grand day out. They didn't get married with a license so I don't think there were any issues but john's mentioned of this parish farmer which is strange, as clearly the parish had no farm land, so one can only conclude that this refers to the farm in Chapel, as John had taken over the farm in 1822.

Elizabeth is not mentioned in the family census at Halsteads but may have been living with a relative in London. The entry states niece so one would assume her Aunt is Elizabeth wife of  Fredddrick, now her father John didn't have an Elizabeth sibling, but her mother did but this Elizabeth was born in 1801as stated above as such it doesn't match but the title niece is a loose term used to describe many a relationship and my family use it in its loose term so there could be another connection or this couldn't be the right Elizabeth.

Also Ann their daughter is living and working Buxton and son Samuel is living and working on a local relatives farm.

Halstead farm is situated abutting Sittinglow farm on the south eastern side of Sittinglow (hill).  It is possible that the two farms where one and as such where divided between two brother. Sittinglow seems to be the oldest of the two farms and  is frequently mention in Dr Cleggs dairy.
