At the time of the 1861 census, Philip & Sarah are living at Cross cottages.

There is another family of Hartle's living & farming  in Mellor before Philip & Sarah move here. Its very probable that John Hartle and the below William Hartle are both brothers. This is born out by the fact that Ellen Marchington is confirmed as marrying her cousin Arthur Hartle who is mentioned below.

I conclude that John Rowbottom carved the Head stones. Both graves are situated next to each other at the far south east section of  Mellor Parish Church.

John Marchington married a Martha Ann Philips on the 28 November 1898 at St Peters Church Fairfield.   Martha is reputed to have lived and worked on the Chatsworth estate at this time.  John use to deliver fire wood to the house and that is how they met.

Martha's fathers name was Goldstraw Phillips, his profession being stated on John & Martha's marriage cert' as a 'Slater. Goldstraw died before the 1881 census. Hannah remarried to a James Rigby and had a further two children being girls; Mary & ?. Mary lived near Hartington on a farm with her daughter May. May  married Arthur Plough and were farming. (turn right under rail tunnel first farm on the right). May's sister 'unknown name' lived at Sheffield, she was blind. John Walter.1901 & Philip.1899 use to visit her once a year. Both John & Philip use to visit Mary on a regular basis.
In the 1891 census Martha has left home but still living & working in the Buxton area. Mary Rigby her sister is living with her father.  It would seem that Hannah had since died. Thomas Phillips is living in Bowden Edge, Chapel. John  cant not be found in the Derbyshire 1891 census he was ever missed off or was working else where outside the shire.

John & Martha married on the 28 November 1898 at Fairfield parish church where Johns Great Grandfather Joseph was married  and buried. Martha's occupation is omitted in the marriage cert' John's profession is given as a Labourer. Both fathers are stated as deceased. The witness were John Francis & Mary Hannah Pine. There place of Residence is given as Hagshaw, Fairfield. Mary Pines was Martha's sister, being Mary Rigby. Thomas Phillips lived in Buxton and married a lady who worked as a conductor on the buses. She use to know John Walter.1923 who also worked on the buses. She use to let Lily Marchington on the bus for free when traveling to Stockport.  Mary Hannah Pines died around 1960.

John & Martha where living at Rowsley Cottages, Chatsworth.  Martha was reportedly the Governess to the Duke of Devonshire's children at Chatsworth house, however having  contacted Chatsworth house historian there are no records of Martha working here, but that's not unusual as wage records were not keep.  (link to Chatworth  Web Site)  Bakewell.  John reportedly  delivered  firewood to the estate and it would seem that they meet here. There is a Joseph Marchington registered at Rowsley in the 1891 census, this Joseph being a distant relative, see census pages.

John & Martha where living at Northwood, Darley Dale at the time of the birth of their second  son 'John Walter, it is stated that his occupation is of a 'Steam Riser, at the local Locomotive Sheds, in Bakewell.

John did not take over the running of the family farm at Upper Bradshaw, Mellor after the death of his father. The assets of the farm were split between the children upon the death of Sarah in 1925. copy of Sarah’s will. It would seem John had a fallout with his parents and as such his exact whereabouts at the time of his fathers death was not know. John moved back to the New Mills area around 1908 and farmed at Soapy Barn Farm for a short while before moving to High Lea Rd and then onto Larkhill Terrace where he was working in a local quarry he later worked in a local calico print factory at birch vale to which he was self employed  carter. According to Lily Woodhall,  John’s granddaughter, John was found many times in the early morning by his sons John & Philip having spent the evening in the pub, (Fox Inn) sleeping under his horse the horse would have its legs spread over him protecting him and would not move until it recognised someone.

Sam asked his sister Sarah who married Thomas Stafford,  to add his name to her sons name because no child was called Samuel in the family.  But Sarah didn't because the Childs name would have been to long being Thomas Charles Marchington Stafford.

Samuel owed property in Dove Holes & New Mills. To which he rented out He rented one cottage near  Dove Holes to Jack Marchington's.1923 ex girl friend 'Norma' who was getting married. He owned numbers  75,77,79 Whitle Bank & Lark Hill Terrace as well.

Picture of Thomas

Thomas  Stafford died in Dec 1939 age 60
Sarah Stafford nee Marchington died  in 1945 age 68.

Albert Philip Marchington Stafford died on the 22 Dec 1964 age 53 having suffered from a Heart attack. Edith Stafford recalls Samuel Marchington picking faults with Albert's crops, he wound appear in a field of  crops and state "potato's quiet a few rotten there or caterpillars are taking a lot of your cabbages and your crops have a lot of grass between them." Edith recalls Samuel to be a very sarcastic but funny man and his comments where not a direct criticism but never the less not welcome.

Edith gave me a large turn of the century photo album containing many family photos of the Stafford's, Marchington's & Hartle's and neighbours of Eaves Knoll. Most of the people in the photos sadly can not now be recognised and named, Edith & myself came to the conclusion that we needed her mothers generation to point & name the persons in most of the photos. However we are certain that they are family members and as such I have displayed the un-names ones here purely because they are of such high quality having been well preserved .

Young women weary of life
Painful discovery in a shippon at New Mills

‘A painful sensation was caused in New Mills on Saturday by report.  Miss M A. Marchington who lived with her mother at Hodge Hey Farm, Whitle, had committed suicide. The deceased who was only 30 and had since been nervous and depressed on Saturday she went to a farm occupied by her brother a short distance across some fields. There she appeared to go into the cow shed got on to the milking stool and hanged herself by a rope attached to the ceiling.
Mrs. E Marsland found her. On her shawl the deceased had pinned a note stating why she had done the deed.
Inquest held by Mr. Sydney Taylor coroner for the High Peak.
Samuel Marchington of Hodge Hey farm stated that it was his sister. For the last six month she was ill and had been attended by Dr Chapman. She started with Influenza, which left her very nervous, and during the previous week she had been low-spirited.
Samuel Marchington last saw his sister alive at 12:45 noon. She had no dinner and went across the fields. The next he heard Mrs. Marsland shouting at around 3 pm. Samuel went to the farm and saw his sister hanging, he cut her down. The body was cold. Dr Pemberton saw her 10 minutes later. Mrs. Eli Marsland went to the barn between 2:30 – 3 pm and discovered her. She was clear of the ground and the stool had been kicked over. Constable Lichfield visited the farm and discovered a note pinned to the deceased's jacket:- " Weary of life for want of sleep. My illness has left me so nervous. Don't fret for me mother, sisters & brothers. You have all done your best for me. I cannot be a burden to mother any longer. Ask Maria Hambleton & Hannah Hill to my funeral. M.A.M." ‘
The jury returned a verdict of suicide whilst unsound mind.

A story told by my father (Jack Marchington.1923 ) to myself and my siblings was that a ghost riding a white horse was seen in Winbry woods (near Apple Tree Farm) and this ghost was Martha. Having spoken to one of my auntie she confirmed this story and added that the ghost was seen by other members of the family???
