Philip
Marchington.2nd Sept 1838 was born at Hallsteads farm,
Chapel-en-le-Frith. Philip was the 5th son of John Marchington & Hannah Hallam of Halsteads Farm now regarded as being in Dove Holes. At the time of the 1841 census, Philip is only 3 years old & living at Halsteads with his parents. Philip married a local girl of Peak Forest called Sarah Hartle. They were
married in the Chapel in the village of Peak Forest on the 18th August
1858.
At the time of the 1861 census, Philip & Sarah are living at Cross
cottages. They resided at Cross Cottages from 1859 to 1867 then moving to:
Upper Bradshaw Farm in Mellor.
Sarah's parents show up in the 1881 census as follows: There is another family of Hartle's
living & farming in Mellor before Philip & Sarah move here. Its
very probable that John Hartle and the below William Hartle are both brothers.
This is born out by the fact that Ellen Marchington is confirmed as marrying her
cousin Arthur Hartle who is mentioned below. Arthur & Ellen have taken over the farm from William Hartle. William is still residing with them, being 70 years of age. Retired farmer and widow. 1881 census Far

John Rowbottom carved the Head stones. Both graves are situated next to each

John did not take over the running of the family farm at Upper Bradshaw, Mellor after the death of his father. The assets of the farm were split between the children upon the death of Sarah in 1925. copy of Sarah’s will. It would seem John had a fallout with his parents and as such his exact whereabouts at the time of his fathers death was not know. John moved back to the New Mills area around 1908 and farmed at Soapy Barn Farm for a short while before moving to High Lea Rd and then onto Larkhill Terrace where he was working in a local quarry he later worked in a local calico print factory at birch vale to which he was self employed carter. According to Lily Woodhall, John’s granddaughter, John was found many times in the early morning by his sons John & Philip having spent the evening in the pub, (Fox Inn) sleeping under his horse the horse would have its legs spread over him protecting him and would not move until it recognised someone. Edith Stafford recalls Samuel Marchington picking faults with Albert's crops, he wound appear in a field of crops and state "potato's quiet a few rotten there or caterpillars are taking a lot of your cabbages and your crops have a lot of grass between them." Edith recalls Samuel to be a very sarcastic but funny man and his comments where not a direct criticism but never the less not welcome. Edith gave me a large turn of the century photo album containing many family photos of the Stafford's, Marchington's & Hartle's and neighbours of Eaves Knoll. Most of the people in the photos sadly can not now be recognised and named, Edith & myself came to the conclusion that we needed her mothers generation to point & name the persons in most of the photos. However we are certain that they are family members and as such I have displayed the un-names ones here purely because they are of such high quality having been well preserved . 1.5.2.# Martha Ann Marchington. 28th Oct 1878. Miss M A. Marchington who lived with her mother at Hodge Hey Farm, Whitle,

and depressed on Saturday she went to a farm occupied by her brother a short
distance across some fields. There she appeared to go into the cow shed got on
to the milking stool and hanged herself by a rope attached to the ceiling.
A story told by my father (Jack Marchington.1923 ) to myself and my siblings was that a ghost riding a white horse was seen in Winbry woods (near Apple Tree Farm) and this ghost was Martha. John Walter, was a farm labourer at the age of 14 but at the age of 16 he joined the army hoping to serve in the First World War, however his mother was horrified when she found out and as such she refuse to allow him to join owing to the fact that John's cousin Frank was killed in action and John's brother Philip was a PoW. He was the Duke of Devonshire's dispatch rider and whilst riding for the duke he was involved in a serious accident which resulted in John breaking his right leg in numerous places. The injury never healed correctly, which resulted in him wearing a lower caliper to his leg. The accident was due to a lady walking out in front of his motor cycle. John continued his army career and later trained the Gurker regiment at Cithoroe, Lancashire and operating Searchlights during the Second World War. However his injury was getting worse and as such he was discharged from the army on medical grounds on the 19 Dec 1941. He had served with colours. Copy of army record.
