1.2 Joseph Marchington.c1831. Halstead Farm. Chapel. Joseph could have had a first wife who died (possible marriage in 1856 or 58 in Manchester) and he later married Martha Hartle in 1861 at Peak Forest. (not in the St Caths index). Martha was possibly the Daughter of John & Ellin Hartle of Peak Forest clan. The Hartle's married many Marchington's in this period.

There is a birth for a Hannah registered in Bakewell with one other child being John who was a twin but it would seem he died at what time is unclear if it is this Hannah's twin.. Hannah & Mary were possible children to Joseph first wife. The birth certificates of these children needs checking to confirm it.

A son is baptised as John Hartle confirming the marriage and mothers maiden name of Hartle. 

At the time of the 1841 census, Joseph is stated as being 9 years old & living with his parents at Halsteads farm and again in the 1851 census.

At the time of the 1861 census, Joseph & his family are living at Cross Cottages. Joseph is working on his
fathers farm, Halsteads. Halsteads farm supplied the local quarries with Ponies. Joseph married Martha Hartle in 1856.

Joseph's father John Marchington died in 1869. Leaving his estate to be dived  into eight equal parts between his children.
John's eldest son John continued farming Halsteads along with Joseph. Living in separate households the other siblings;.
Samuel continued working in the local Quarry along with Thomas & William. Philip moved to Mellor to farm.
Joseph's  sisters, Martha married  into the Potts of Chapel.  Ann married John Chadwick of Manchester & Elizabeth
married Frances Fletcher of Manchester.
In  1880 Joseph is not mention as owning any land in the register however in the 1881 census his wife is a farmer of 22 acres. Samuel his brother  is recorded as owning  12 acres of land with a gross estimated rent value of �23 & 4 s. Samuel's holding being regarded at the time of a small holder rather than farmer. John, Joseph's brother is mentioned as owing 26 acres with a yearly gross rent value of �218 & 11s. Therefore Joseph's  fathers estate could have been 68 acres in size. Possibly the 22 acres which Martha was farming being her husbands  Joseph's holding. 

At the time of the 1881 census. Martha is stated as being a widow. Joseph died on the 28th Oct 1875.
There were christening of children record in the Peak Forest to a Joseph & Martha being:

Young John, was left to board with his grandmother while George and his wife Hannah was establishing themselves in Manchester.  It is interesting to note that they are boarding with  at Thomas & Elizabeth Hartle's dwelling,

Emily died on the 5 Sept 1976 age 87. William Marchington.c1885. died 30 Dec 1931. Killed at,  Bee-Low-Quarry.
Inquest held on the 22 Dec 1931. Recorded:   Accidental death. Cause of death, 'Struck by falling stone.
further information held at the 'Miners Research Museum, Harper Hill, Buxton.
William lived at, 4 New Houses, Dove Holes. at the time of his death.
He was know as 'Darky, reputedly, due to him having only one arm??? However Donald Buckley a local farming at Sittinglow farm,  recalls a  Marchington being called Darky due to his Olive skin and a few other family members have confirmed this.

Married Agnes Hartle in 1928 in Chapel Agnas was born on the 13 Feb 1906., at Laneside farm, Blackbrook. Daughter of Joseph  Hartle & Harriotte Fletcher who farmed at Laneside Farm Chapel.

Harold died on the 7th March 1980 and is buried at Chapel. Agnes died on the 12th March 1978.

Frank was born at, Black Brook farm, and is currently living in Buxsworth (Bugsworth) farming and shares a passion for Steam Engines along with his son Anthony. Frank can be found at most of the UK steam fairs. Frank recalls his Gran' Lavina to be a very strict and unapproachable person.

Samuel is lving with his siblings in the 1891 census. There father is farming at the old family farm of Halsteads and as such it seems the children are living in the family cottages Cross cottages. their given ages are wildly out from their birthdays.
