Grace died on the  26th April 1865.  apr/may/jun1865 according to the St Caths index but the MI state:c475   Grace wife of Samuel Marchington of Cross Cottages died 21 April 1863 age 28. someone read the year wrong?

Samuel remarried to a Sarah Pott a month after Graces death. Sarah Pott  was born in 1833. They married on the 14 Sept 1865.Children to Sarah:
1.3.# Martha. 1867,

1.3.# Sarah. 1870,
1.3.3 John.1872,
1.3.# Frances. 1874.

Samuel's father, John Marchington died in 1869. Leaving his estate to be dived  into eight equal parts between his children.
John's eldest son John continued farming Halsteads along with Joseph. Living in separate households.
Samuel continued working in the local Quarry along with Thomas & William. Philip moved to Mellor to farm.
Samuel's  sisters, Martha married  into the Potts of Chapel.  Ann married John Chadwick of Manchester & Elizabeth married Frances Fletcher of Manchester.
Samuels daughter Mary in the 1881 census is living with her aunt in Manchester follow her name link for further information.

In  1874. Samuel is recorded as owning  12 acres of land with a gross estimated rent value (land tax) of 23 & 4 s. Samuel's holding being regarded at the time of a small holder rather than farmer. John his brother is mentioned as owing 26 acres with a yearly gross rent value of 218 & 11s. Samuel's other brother Joseph is not mention as owning any land in the register however in the 1881 census his wife is a farmer of 22 acres. Therefore John's fathers estate could have been 68 acres in size. Possibly the 22 acres which Martha, Joseph's held being rented land. Samuel obviously increased his land by 1881.

At the time of the 1881 census. Samuel's given age is 50 years old. Residing at Cross Cottages. Being a farmer of 22 acres. Married to Sarah ? age 50.
Having been give part of the farm land from Halsteads, Samuel farmed this land from his new home, Cross Cottages.

At the time of the 1891 census it would seem that Samuel & his family moved back to the Farm house at Halsteads
possibly taking over the house previously occupied by his late brothers wife Martha. note their given ages both only aged 6 years in 10.
