(h.4.2 ) g.1. James Marchington.1774.
Sittinglow.
First official mention of James is made in a court
case against an Ellis Dakin who stole clothing. James along with John Hall
& Thomas Frost gave information to the court on the 19 Aug 1801 at
Castleton. John & Thomas are stated as Miners of Castleton and James of
Sittinglow. Ellis Dakin is of Castleton, a Weaver. DRO:
Q/SB/2/1330 1332. There was another James Marchinton in Castleton at this
time, he was married to a lady called Needham and was from the Lead mining
family of that area through to Amos Marchington.
James married Charity Potts on the 7th
of November 1803 at Chapel en le Frith parish church, St Becket's. They were
married by license due to Charity being a minor. Charity was baptised on the
17th Oct 1784 being the daughter of Edmund Potts of Dove Holes. Charity's
father Edmund Potts was buried on the 30th May 1807 age 55.
James states on the marriage license that he his a butcher by trade. A John
Walker attended with him to apply for the marriage license at Bakewell the
cost being 15 shillings which seems a large sum. James signs the license in his own hand which is clear
and neat and demonstrates the high educational system within Chapel parish to
which the Marchingtons help to setup.
James was the son of John
& Grace Marchington of Sittinglow Chapel en le Frith. In the 1841Census it
looks like James 7 Charitys age is incorrectley given which isn't unusual for
the census enumerator to round of ages. The Potts were very much interbreed with the Marchington's
around this time.
Their first child being Elizabeth
Marchington, baptised: 20 May 1804. Obviously they married due to Charity
being pregnant.
They had a further child baptised at Chapel en le Frith on the 23 Apr 1809
being Marianne Marchington., also they had buried a child called Charity
Marchington on the 8 Jun 1809 in Chapel.
It would seem they moved to the Abbey Hey area of Gorton,
Manchester ( now
Debdale park & reservoirs ) around 1804. The first mention of a
baptism in the Gorton parish of James & Charity is at St James Parish
church, Gorton.

Total sum of possibly children: note; James must have had a
son John as the family trend is to have one and that one is always the eldest
son. There is a John in the area born c1801 but this cant be their son as
the birth is 3 years before their marriage but could they have has this child
out of wedlock?

James occupation is given as Baker and Butcher and later
farmer. He may have owned a shop of some-sort or may have traveled the farms
slaughtering animals on a kind of mobile business which was one of the methods
of procurement at the time. Gorton at this time was still a rural area. In the
tithe map
of 1841 James is mentioned as owing certain parcels of land around the Abbey Hey
area and a possible farm dwelling is show. (Hey' is an old word meaning 'enclosure' a place to gather & enclose
animals a 'trap' used to drive animals for ease of hunting). Manchester as it was then ended at what is now the Mancunium way
flyover, but later Gorton came under its control. There
was a growing Cotton industry forming in the Medlock valley area ( Mancunium way
flyover). Which would attract many Marchington's and other to this area and the
areas of Chorlton being roughly between Hyde rd - Ardwick green to Oxford Rd
down to the Mancunium way flyover. The river Medlock which can still be seen at
the Ardwick end of the fly over more or less follows the fly over underground,
but it was before the building of the flyover viewable from the ground and would
have been heavily lined with Mill buildings.
In a local history book called 'A History of Gorton &
Openshaw' by Ernest France. a reference is made to bull baiting on page 3.
"In 1829 there were five bull baits in or near Gorton. One such being
'Marchingtons' in Abbey Hey. 'Marchingtons' was a field owned by James
Marchington, a brewer." Ernest France has in his possession many old photos
of Gorton to which he kindly shown me. They show the Gorton area to be a rural area still
in the late 1800's and early 1900's around the area of Abbey Hey.
So far, James has been mentioned as a Baker, Butcher, Farmer
& Brewer! In the 1841 Tithe map
of the Abbey Hey area, James owns some parcels of land
around the Abbey Hey area stretching down to the now reservoirs and had obviously done well for himself, he did
receive from his fathers Will of 1806 a sum of £30, which he may have invested
in purchasing land and this would explain his varied occupations, not to mention
that he may have been growing brewing crops and probably specialised in
breeding, slaughtering & butchery. There was an old Tannery.
1 2 in Gorton which
could have taken James hides. This was situated on Tan-yard
Brow just of Hyde Road.

Savory
St was in West Gorton just off Hyde road, and is now where the Mecca Bingo hall
is. This picture shows what's left of Son
St which ran onto Savory St & from Birch St. The dilapidated shops on
Hyde road show signs of being of 1860 origin, and were probably the type
of dwelling in that area at the time of these census returns.

Could John be the son of James.1774 - James must have named at
least one son John given the family trend but I cant find one in the parish records as
yet but the John below is a possible candidate.

the East End is used across the census and gives no number to
the address, as such one would assume its the area of Manchester road being at
the extreme of the area (eastside) next to the Ashton-u-Lynne area.
It looks like John & Haanah had lodgers. The given names were unclear
Margaret black??? may be Blackman or Blackson the enumerator has crammed the

Looks like John is working a Milk round in the area and the
given address is number 91. Cant find any address for East side in current A-Z

Hannah could have died in either Jan,Feb or March of 1868 recorded
at Ashton given age 66 which matches the census given age. There is a recording
for a John in Ashton too in the year 1863. The 1861 census would need to be
checked to verify.
