Peak Forest

This pocket of Marchington's cant be tied into earlier branches as I have failed to come across any links back from the mentioned Old Henry. As such I will start this branch with PF for Peak Forest branch.

Notes relating to those mining for lead ore between Chapel and Castleton:

'Old' Henry Marchington mining around Castleton between 1760-1765

John Marchington mining around Castleton between 1752-1779

James Marchinton mining around Castleton between 1788-1815

Theory:  Henry being the father of a young Henry and John.

John the father of James who died leaving a will. John being the husband of Margaret.

John Marchington.1711; was a member of the lead miners (Barmoot) court from 1752
until 1779. This court was held at the Devonshire Arms Inn at Peak Forest, to
sort out any mining disputes, it was a self regulating industry and such courts were backed by the Duchy of Lancaster who held the mineral rights to the High Peak as it was part of the Duchy and the Crowns private income.

John Marchington.1711; was mining at the following locations, c.1752 'at Harret Low
Hillocks on Gautries', c.1763 & 1766 ' on Barmoor and at Jack Thous Tickled
Me Once Again Mine on Barmoor Great Vein', c.1770 ' on Gautries Rake', c.1774
- 1777 ' in Paddock Vein in Barmoor and on Beelow Top', c.1779 'at Fearney
Slack Old Vein and John Garlick's Old Founder at the Loads Barn'.
Above information was given to me my a chap who is writing a book on High Peak Lead mining.

John Marchington.1711.  Peak Forest   died on the 20th Feb1787 given age 76 and was buried at Peak Forest Chapel along with his wife Margaret who died on the 6th July 1784 given age 68. Also a Mary is also buried with them. one would assume its their daughter being a spinster, but her age doesn't match also a marriage is recorded for a Mary as per her section, neither events can be proved to be the sad Mary child o John & Margaret but an educated guess would leave me to assume it is their daughter.

Grave Ref: C203
To the memory of MARGARET the wife of JOHN MARCHINGTON who departed this life the 6th of July 1784 aged 68 years afflictions sore long time she bore Physician's (sic) help was vain
till god did please to give me ease and freed her pain (again sic) Also the above named JOHN
MARCHINGTON departed this life the 20th of February 1787 aged 76 years Also MARY MARCHINGTON departed this life the 22nd of July 1817 aged 68 years.

Children of John Marchington.1711

PF1.1.1 James Marchington.1739. Peak Forest. Married Alice Needham on the 3 July 1764. James was a miner by trade. They had no surviving children.

This James made a will in 1819
James Marchinton.   Died without heir on the 23 May 1823.  His wife Alice died on the 8th Dec 1814. He left his estate to his brothers children according to his will wrote in 1819., being James Marchinton  son of his brother John &  Thomas Marchinton son of one of his brothers. (Thomas & James were probably  living in Tideswell). Also nieces  Margaret Watts & Jane Oldfield. Jane is stated as unmarried in the will so she could carry her aunts maiden name, also she is stated as of Tideswell..

James's Will states the following: Miner of Peak Forest Parish. I  bequeath … unto my Nephew James Marchinton son of John Marchinton of Sheffield my brother only paying unto my nephew Thomas Marchinton of Tideswell the sum of five pounds likewise to my Niece Margaret Watts the sum of Five pounds then I will that unto my niece Jane Oldfield shall have the privilege of room for one  pair of rooms so long as she shall remain unmarried…. He goes onto nominate James his nephew along with a Robert Hartle as Executives of his will, the date being 7th April 1819.

The following is taken from Peak Forest Porobate entry which confirms the link.
James. MARCHINTON. Executors, Robert HARTLE & James MARCHINTON.   Died 25 May 1823, proved Sept 29, under £100.

James & Alice's grave stones reads as follows: ”Here lieth the body of ALICE the wife of JAMES MARCHINGTON who departed this life 8th December 1814 aged 72 years Also the body of JAMES MARCHINGTON who departed this life the 23rd  of May 1823 aged 84 years.” Taken from Memorial Inscription. MI Ref :C205 held in Matlock Records Office. (MRO).

Note; the name is spelt with a G. and in his Will its without, this explains the dropping of the G in this family line.

‘James Marchington; was mining lead at 'Oxlow Old Vein near the Loads Barn' in
1788, in 1809 -1813 he was mining at Smiler Mine on Old White Rake on Eldon
Hill overlooking Peak Forest village and in 1815 he was at Coalpithole Mine
at Perryfoot.’

PF1.1.#Mary Marchington  b.1742 married possibly in 1760  in the Peak Forest PR to a  Robert Holme IGI & PR.

Also there is a Mary who is buried with john & Margaret her parents, one would assume its their daughter being a spinster, but her age doesn't match being 7 years out,  also a marriage is recorded for a Mary as above, neither events can be proved to be the said Mary child of John & Margaret but an educated guess would leave me to assume it is their daughter and the mariage event is probably another Mary Marchington.

To the memory of MARGARET the wife of JOHN MARCHINGTON who departed this life the 6th of July 1784 aged 68 years afflictions sore long time she bore Physician's (sic) help was vain

PF1.1.3 John Marchinton. 1754. Peak Forest. Moved to Sheffield. Married a Mary Stillings on the 23 Aug 1790 at Ecclesfield, Sheffield and possible did so having found out that Mary was pregnant with their child Margaret having her around the 12 Dec 1790. This is so typical of the time having come across it so often. its even thought that a man at that time would not commit himself to marriage unless he was able to pregnant his future planned wife!! How true that theory is I don’t know but having been caught out he had to do the decent thing anyway.

Children:
Margaret Marchinton, Bpt: 29 Dec 1791, Ecclesfield, Sheffield.

PF1.2.  Henry Marchingtonc1715. Peak Forest.

Children:

11 June 1742 Mary daughter of Henry Marchinton for boxon  young baptised at Slack Hall.

26 April 1747. Ann the Daughter of Henry Marchinton the Younger- otherwise boxor of Rushop in this parish. Chapel PR.

Both these baptisms were recorded in the Chapel en le Frith PR, both of which stated Henry the younger this has led to some confusion as there were two other Henry's in the parish being  father and son. Neither Mary or Ann feature in the Will of the Sittinglow farm  Henry & son also strangely the world boxon is used in the PR entry for both girls? what this means is unclear but I assume the entries were made in the Chapel PR for a political statement, at the time the rise of the Purist movement and Meeting houses for such  were on the increase and I would assume the then vicar was ensuring that any child baptised within the parish was recorded in the PR even thou he didn't perform the event himself.
