Marchington's of Kent

James Vardy.  Born 14 Aug 1810. At Blackwell, Derbyshire. Married Mary Ward who was born in 1809 at Arnold, Nottingham. James died in 1895. Mary died in 1890. Children: John.19th Mar 1849.

John Vardy.  Born 19th March  1849. At Twinyards, Blackwell, Mansfield, Derbyshire.

John enlisted in the army at Chesterfield in 1868. Army No: 1683441. Regiment Foot Light Infantry 1st Batt. Limerick.. He served in Ireland, Malta, Gibraltar & Guernsey. reaching the rank of Colour Sergeant in the Foot regiment. John was discharged at Gosport in 1883. and went on to join the military  prison service in Cairo serving as a Prison Officer. John was allegedly poisoned by a prisoner in 1887. He died on the 16 June. Age 38. and is buried at Cairo.

John changed his name to Marchington at Malta in 1870. There is no family connection with the name change that I or John's present day family know of. Possibly John knew a Marchington friend/ family of some sort probably in his youth in Blackwell Derbyshire and as such took the name.  John could have been embarrassed by the name Vardy, the name being of Irish decent, John obviously serving in Ireland could have meet some hostility to his name and as such  this could have been the cause of the name change? (my theory only).

John 'Vardy' Marchington died on the 16th Jun 1887 at Cairo. Mary returned to Kent, England with here children. Mary died on the 24 Jan 1913. Cant find an event which matches this death of Mary or their marriage.
