Joseph Marchington 1867- Dove Holes |

1.2.6 Joseph Marchington. b1866. Cross Cottages Dove Holes. Married Sarah Eliz' Wiggins who was born in Wardington Oxon. Possible Joseph married in 1893 in the Oldham district (conflict with another Joseph marriage at the same time and place, however this date seems to fit the birth of the children). Children all born in Oldham. Sarah's shows up in the 1881 census as living with her Grandfather her parents may be working away or Sarah could have been illegitimate daughter of Louisa?? Her birth cert would have to be checked to find the real reason. There are only two Wiggins families in Handborough at this time. There are 343 individuals in the Oxfordshire county as a whole and there is one Wiggin family from the Handborough area living in Lancashire!, obviously there must be a connection between Sarah E Wiggins, could the Lancashire family be hers and she was sent to her grandfathers because of ill health?? 1881 census:
3 Pug Lane, Handborough, Oxford. PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1513 Folio 61 Page 8

Sarah E
Marchington. died in 1958 age 83 in the Banbury district. Both are buried in
Wardington Church yard which is strange given Joseph died in Oldham?? Possibly
there son/s where living in Banbury and brought their mother down from Oldham
after Joseph death and arranged the funeral to take place in Banbury?? CHILDREN 1.2.6.1 William Marchington.1894. Oldham. Served in the first world war and was posted to the Gallipoli, Turkey to fight the Turks its stated by his family that he exchanged gifts in no mans land with the Turks at Christmas and made friends with some of them when truces were made to collect the dead. He married a Miss Ada Long in 1919 in the Oldham area and later moved his family to the area of Banbury. Its possible that William followed one of his siblings here or vice-verser as his brother Harry died in Banbury district. Ada died in Jan/Feb/mar of 1955 in the Banbury area stated age at death 59. William remarried to a Miss Carter in 1957 in the Banbury area she could have been Florence Mabel as there is a death recorded in Banbury area in 1980 and her date of birth was the 11th may 1899. Its stated by Coleen cook that this marriage didn't work out and William left everything and moved to Australia to live with his daughter Alice. Other children born in the area also see Dover page.. Elizabeth Sarah.1886,
I am Colleen Cook on the tree. There
are 240 individuals on our tree at the moment and I have reached Hannah
and John. I know it is %100 correct up to Sarah Mellor and William
Marchington. Nana (Alice Marchington) spoke extensively of her
relatives. Her brother is the oldest living Marchington that I know of
(Ronald Marchington is about 82) and I sent him our family tree last
month, since then I have gone further back and am about to send him a
more updated version. It has been slow going because I am a
perfectionist, I double check every bit of data against BMD, census,
voters records etc.
Unfortunately Great Aunt Ada Marchington
passed away when I was a child, but I remember that Nana wrote to her in
England every month. William 1896 moved to Australia after his wife Ada
Long died. He had remarried, but it didn't work out and he left
his wife with everything and moved here to live with us. Dad and
William toured all around Australia by car and William helped dad to
build his house. He fought in World War One at the battle of the
Dardanelle's and managed to survive the worst of it to return and marry
Ada Long. William used to tell dad about the Dardanelle's
sometimes, but only if he had a bit to drink which wasn't very often.
(Dad said that it was so horrible that William never spoke of it).
But he was still in the Dardanelle's after the Australians had moved out
(We call it Gallipoli over here), and over Xmas the Turks and English
sat in no-mans land and exchanged gifts. William greatly admired
the Turks and despite being on opposing sides, had made friends
with some of them during the brief truces to collect the dead.
Alice Marchington (my grandmother), was
named after Alice Marchington (Williams sister), whom died in 1911.
William loved his sister very much and named his first daughter after
her to please his mother Sarah Elizabeth (Wiggins) Marchington.
Sarah E Wiggins was married to Joseph Marchington whom had a twin
brother Joe that died shortly after birth. I have twin children
too.
Alice Marchington (Cook) moved to Australia
in 1958 after her mother Ada Marchington had died, but before her father
William Marchington had remarried. Do you had records of whom he
remarried? Do you know if one of Sarah Elizabeth's children
were adopted?
Joseph Marchington married Sarah Elizabeth Wiggins
in 1893 Sarah was born in Kings Norton/Staf'shire, Warw'shire, Worc's in
1874. Sarah died in 1955. Dad used to live just around the corner
from her and went to her place first after school before going home (dad being
her great grandson and born in 1942). The entire family. Elizabeth, her
son William and wife Ada, their Daughter Alice and her husband John Cook and
my father all lived within a street of each other and dad said they were
always to be found at one of the houses. Joseph died in 1925.
